Hello from beautiful Patmos! I’m never quite sure if my life is one long holiday or if I never have a proper holiday but this definitely feels like a holiday and I’m lapping it up. Naps (and I never nap!), reading, eating every type of grilled cheese and staying on the beach until 7 p.m has been amazingly restorative this week.
I just finished reading John Williams’s Stoner which had been on my to-read list forever and immediately had to take myself for a solo contemplative swim. It really is that good. Fellow fans of Anne Tyler’s novels would appreciate the quiet but devastating life story of one seemingly unremarkable professor born in early 20th century America. The existential sadness has now passed but it’s one I’ll remember forever. My only complaint was I wish Williams’ had turned it into a series and dedicated a novel each to Edith, Grace and Katherine. I *need* to understand Edith!
