One of my recent goals (I find ‘goals’ works better for me than ‘resolutions’ because I am perennially sub-par) has been to shop more consciously and to massively reduce impulse puchases. Impulse to me isn’t so much about the see it-buy it because I do think that’s a valuable reaction to be listened to for certain items. It’s more about buying without mentally walking through my wardrobe, checking I don’t have something that can work in the same way and really checking in with myself mentally; how much am I really going to wear this? Take brown jeans for example. Everytime I see a pair, I like them and I often think, ok, this is the right pair…. spoiler alert, I have yet to find a pair that I consistently reach for over blue jeans and I’ve come to the conclusion that mid-brown jeans maybe just aren’t my thing in reality. Long story short, shop well, shop better and hopefully shop less as a result.
One of my main triggers for impulse shopping is a trip on the horizon and with some winter sunshine this month, I’ve been conscious of falling off my self-imposed wagon. They key is to organise what I’m taking with me at least a week, preferably two, before which is easy in the winter becuase you’re not wearing lots of what’s going in your case before you go. More on how I pack later but I find laying everything out and working out oufits in advance is the best way to prevent both over-packing and over-zealously buying things solely for said holiday. Below are the pieces I found I was lacking and/or can see myself wearing throughout the year. I will concede these are all still a want albeit hopefully more mindful ones!
