7 Outfits for Shoulder Season
The no-man’s land of getting dressed might just be my favourite
September is a funny old time sartorially. We’ve got both eyes on the incoming cold snap(s) but one foot still in summer mode. Some days I can’t wait to wear cashmere and leather boots (normally when it decides to be 25 degrees) while others I feel like I can’t remember how to get dressed without flip flops.
I love going away in September too (if you don’t have kids or school holidays to abide by it’s the best) so I’m not too quick to pack away all the summer bits - I’m in Mallorca as we speak - but always try and find time to do a big wardrobe clean-out and reorganisation this time of year too. I read Troupe’s newsletter the other day about organising our closets and it was the final push I needed to move anything I’m not wearing on a monthly basis into a seperate closet (aka our spare room). So very fancy dresses, suits and anything very festive or high summer is now on a separate rail and cardigans, casual jackets and Friday night tops are at front of house and ready to be grabbed and inspire fresh takes (hopefully). I also bought boot stuffers and re-hung all my bags on these so they’re also at eye level… I’m someone where if I’m in a rush and I can’t see it I’m not going to be wearing it, and I’m always in a rush so putting things where I can see them rather than away in boxes is key.
In short, September is a month of contrasts but that to me is often what makes a great outfit. And by great, I just mean an outfit I feel very at home in which ultimately feels like a great outfit. These are some looks from the last week at home and here in Mallorca (which is now pretty fresh in the evenings so jackets and jumpers are needed) which seem to be straddling the seasons in a somewhat confused but kind of fun way. Contradictary dressing is my favourite to be honest; I’ve always been that person who feels much better in a lacy, silky or spangly dress with an old biker jacket thrown over it. So as confused as it might feel at times, I do love this time of year for getting dressed.
1. Back to Black
I love a bit of colour in the summer but in London in the winter, I feel most at home in black. Will be making a lot of exceptions for brown suede this season too. My beloved Miu Miu boat shoes got nicked out of my car in June (I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before but it has been a grieving process so forgive me) so I replaced them with these Tod’s driving shoes. Right now I don’t love them quite as much but felt like the dark brown colour would have more longevity as we head into winter.

2. Day, night, rain, shine
I wore this to a pub lunch last weekend. Chilly at first but by the afternoon it was boiling and a real sun trap. Cute white top with jeans is the ideal formula for exactly such a day. The Regina bag adds just enough whimsy and a bit of colour to keep things interesting.
